Magnet For Motor Vehicle Mishap

How I nearly got run down by a car this morning on my way to work.

I was walking to the bus stop for my trip up to Sylvan, and I turn around to see the bus coming down the hill in to Goose Hollow - EARLY! I'm like, 50 feet from the bus stop and the bus will get to it in about 15 seconds. I begin jogging. An asshole, like myself, in work slacks and a work tie, running to catch a bus to work is like an irresistible bumper target to most moving vehicles. I know this. So I should have been more prepared for what happened next.

I see a car approaching a stop sign on the crossroad about 10 feet in front of me - it's some white Plymouth or something, only a couple years old. Now, this road they're about to pull on to is a one-way road and the bus is barreling down it about to get to its stop. I begin crossing the road in front of the car, which is approaching the stop sign, nearly stopped. As I'm at the front driver-side corner of the car, it keeps edging forward. I'm like, okay, this lady has got to see me, right? I'm walking out in front of her car on the side of the oncoming traffic for this large one-way road. Apparently not, because as I crossed in front of her, the car lurched forward again and rammed in to my right leg, nearly sending me over the hood. I slapped the top of the car's hood as I rounded the front of the car and regained my balance. The driver immediately stopped dead, with the car shaking from jamming on the brakes suddenly. A quick glance thru the windshield towards the driver lets me know this lady is a big music fan, since blocking 80% of her view is an overstuffed CD holder attached to the back of the driver-side sun visor. She's got nearly 6 inches of viewable space to navigate the roads with. Well done.

I kept going, glad to be across the road and jogged the last 30 feet to the bus stop. Thankfully, the bus driver had seen me and waited for me to either get hit by the car or get on the bus. The driver in the Plymouth wasn't even looking to the left. They had trained their focus on the oncoming bus, ready to blitz out from their intersection after it had passed. People are brain-dead before getting that first cup of morning coffee in them (myself included).

Damn, this public transportation thing is dangerous.
