Doom 3 Shipped

Today is the ship date for Doom 3. I, along with millions of other fans of the series, have been waiting for this release for a long time. Ever since the FPS Castle Wolfenstein 3D came out oh-so-long-ago, giving us a quick glimpse in to the future of FPS gaming, I've been anticipating each new release from Id Software. I played Doom all the way through on every difficulty level possible. Doom 2 was my first multiplayer LAN FPS experience, as it was for many other gamers. However, soon after Doom 2 came out, Quake was released (also by Id Software) with a much better graphics engine and enhanced multiplayer controls. The Doom series faded in to happy memories and the Doom engine was put to rest... for a time. It seems it did not lie dormant and forgotten. Over the last 9 years, it has been building its strength by devouring pints of Jägermeister and hordes of souls. It proves to be a wonderful heap of crazed, drunken, shotgun-toting, demon-spawn slaughtering Festivus miracle.

Congratulations to Id Software on actually releasing the game when they said they would. Big hairy sack sweat to Valve for totally blowing the Halflife 2 release last September and for STILL failing to release their software to the awaiting public. The date got moved first to February 2004, then April, and now it's September 2004. Yes, the company claims some source code was stolen, but that shouldn't push a release date back by a year! You guys really blew it.

Go buy Doom 3 and pick up another 512MB of RAM while you're at it. According to the minimum specifications you're going to need it. Doom 3 is looking to make history again, by setting new standards in AI and graphics. Now I just need to figure out how I can take a week off work to properly test drive the game. Hot damn.
