Kite Flying
I finally got Doom 3 and decided to play it this weekend. More on that later.
Show at the Good Times was fun. Both the Odditors and Misfats showing off their new musical wares. $1 PBR, rock, and friends. The Misfats seem to be devouring more fans wherever they show up to play. A couple of newly branded fans asked for "seconds" and the Misfats gave in with a double-encore. Why isn't the drummer fat? Because of tape worms. That's why. Awesome.
You know something you don't see anyone actually doing much these days? Flying kites. Yeah, it's all about Atari and all those fancy Pitfall video games kids are playing these days. No time to go out and enjoy a little kite flying, huh? I am happy to say I took my kid out to the park this weekend in the brutal heat to fly a kite. She was excited for the first 30 seconds, until she realized all there was to it was holding on to the end of the string and watching the kite just hover there in the air above her. Big deal. Hey, there's a slide in this park! Let's do that instead! So, the kite thing didn't go over all that great, but at least I can check it off the list of childhood memories I wanted to share with my kid.
So, I installed Doom 3 this weekend and started it up. Most of my weekend time had already been swallowed up, so I didn't get the install finished until Sunday evening. After I put the kid to bed I had to take care of some work, and by the time I was ready to test drive Doom 3, it was 11pm. 6am comes far too soon to stay up for long, but I wanted to be able to at least see the opening sequence. I give myself 15 minutes and then off to bed. Here we go.
Intro screen comes up and everything looks awesome. I'm all set to begin playing, however I want to be sure all the settings are dialed-in to get the full effect. I tweak the controls and then move on to video settings. By default, my settings were set to "Medium", with the four levels being Low, Medium, High, and Ultra High. I have an nVidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra card installed, so I'm thinking it's time to turn up the heat on that thing. I change the video settings to "High" and that's when the game decides I'm out of my league. I restart Doom 3 and begin a new game. The cinematics are awesome, and I can already tell it's one of those games which glides seamlessly from the movie cinematic to game play. 2 minutes of scenario kick-start cinematics, and then right about when it was ready to launch me in to full-on game play mode, my machine completely locks down. This is the game giving me a kick in the nuts for the sins I've committed prior to install. So, that's all I got to do in Doom 3 for the weekend. I hope find the time next weekend to "play" it again.
