Sapphire Hotel Is Beatles Friendly

The wife has survived another year, earning her an additional birthday. In celebration we decided to wrangle a sitter and go out on the town together. We still live in Vancouver, Washington, and knowing that we have basically exhausted every last place to "go out" to in the 'Couve, I called Noland to recommend a place in Portland which we haven't had the chance to try out yet. After some thought, his recommendation for The Sapphire Hotel on Hawthorne was the one that stuck out as our best choice.

Since it's right on 50th & Hawthore, there was no problems finding the place. Being a Sunday evening, the traffic, parking, and crowd was sparse. This was to our liking, since we were looking for something that would be lightly romantic. This place delivers well. It was an comfortable atmosphere, with every table set with candlelight and simple place-setting. The menu is concise, but every dish sounded awesome. Their drinks are stiff and they have happy-hour every single day from 3-6pm. We had drinks, a fantastic dinner, and then both ordered desert. This is now one of my very favorite places to go for a night out in the Portland area.

One thing that seemed off about the situation was that Noland had suggested it, and almost as if on cue they played an hour worth of Beatles music about 10 minutes after we walked in the door. During our meal and desert the tunes moved more towards a Bob Dylan and some acoustic music, but the Beatles music thing still stuck with me. I like the Beatles just fine, so no problems with the music selection for that evening.

After the Sapphire, we didn't want to cut the night short so we headed to Barnes & Noble in Jantzen Beach for some book perusing. It was a great night out and it was a reminder that Violet and I still enjoy spending time out together without the kids around.

Hey, don't blame me for taking great dessert over crap music; note as well that Porky's has a "fab 4" jersey on their stage-side wall and I still love that place!
