Transformers At The Drive-In

On my way biking home last Friday, I saw Greg Oden, the new Portland Trailblazer, walking West across the Broadway bridge with a group of what looked like basketball camp kids. That guy is huge, of course. Anyway, just an interesting pseudo-event on a normally uneventful way home.

Friday night, the family and I hooked up with the Becker family for some Newberg-style drive-in double-feature action. We caught Shrek the Third and Transformers. Both were great movies. Having young kids, I've probably watched the first 2 Shrek movies more times than is healthy. They are consistently funny, and I am always amazed how each movie is geared for the parents to enjoy along with the kids. Adult-type humor, skillfully plugged in to the mostly kid-style movie. The third does this trick as well. The kids were basically crashed within the first 10 minutes of the Transformers movie, so the wife and I were able to enjoy it without the crazy. Overall, fantastic movie, and I really want to see it again on my home screen or in the beer theaters. There was just so much going on at every single second of screen time, it was a bit hard to follow everything on the darkened drive-in screen. I'm really impressed how they stuck to the original feel of the Transformers show, which I used to watch religiously when I was a youngin'. The best quote I have read so far was from an intern at the Portland Mercury who said, "Transformers is like a ninja wailing on a 1961 Gibson EB-0 studded with canary diamonds... and firing lasers." Exactly.

Saturday and Sunday were spent kicking ass out in the yard. Something which has been long overdue this Summer in the new house. Early morning on Saturday, we went out to check on the Farmers Market in Hollywood. It was pretty neat, but the sun was so harsh, it was hard to stay out long. So, it was a very short trip. Also, on Sunday I took Cannon out for a long-ish bike ride in the used Burley we picked up recently. She was singing and talking most of the way, but then suddenly (about halfway thru the ride) she got very quiet. I looked back and saw she was totally passed out. The kids love going for rides in that trail-behind, and usually get pissed when the ride is over. It ends up being a great workout too, since hauling around all the extra weight feels like you're going uphill constantly.
