Tempin' The B-Hood : Day 2
Enough goofing around. It was time to get to work. Papa and I took Mia to school in the morning after the usual fight to get dressed, fight to eat, fight to fight about anything else. When we returned home, I put on a pot of coffee. Then, since I currently have the assistance of a couple handy people in the house, I began to lay out the details for the project we would be knocking off today. The linen closet.
2 years ago, we took out the brick in the living room area which made up our two-story fireplace and chimney. Downstairs, we fixed the wood in the ceiling and then re-sub floored and laid laminate wood flooring over the footings. This made one big (great) room for the kitchen/living room/dining room. Upstairs, the chimney went between walls, so the drywall had to be cut out and the bricks hauled out of there. For 2 years, the remains of that project have been a hollowed-out 2-foot-by-2-foot box at the top of the stairs. This will now become the linen closet.
We measured and planned and then made a trip out to the Rebuilding Center. I love this place. If you own a home in the Portland area and have not been here... go now. Take a day off of work and just go. We found some great doors and a drawer unit that would do nicely but no pre-built shelving unit that would fit the space just right. We took our armloads of treasure up to the counter. In true RBC spirit she goes, "We've got a sale on those today... A buck a piece!". We could have been holding just about anything. I handed her $5 and said thanks, then we were off to the place that's not so wonderful... the Home Depot. In stark contrast to the giddiness you receive from being in the RBC, the Home Depot is sad. Anyway, we looked around, got the wood and other supplies we needed, and headed home.
We got to work building the box that would fit inside the hole. Halfway thru, we realized we needed more wood and a few other supplies. I went back to the HD and picked up Mia from school. After spending some time building the box, we remeasured and figured out the hole was too small. Out came the old drywall and cleanup ensued.
When it got too late to work, I put the girls to bed and we drank some beers. Still a big hole in the upstairs wall and a fancy new box downstairs.
